So-young is a Korean single mother raising her adolescent son Dong-hyun in the suburbs of Canada during the 90s. As Dong-hyun gets older, he becomes increasingly curious about his heritage and his lte father, whom So-young refuses to discuss. The sudden arrival of devistating news prompts a return to South Koree, where they try to reconnect with their roots.
"Shim and his cast strike their notes perfectly. The film is eventually as universal, redemptive and elegiac as any multimillion-dollar enterprise could ever dream of being...I imagine you will be as impressed ‒ and as moved ‒ as I was"
Dominion Post 4.5 Stars
"The young director coaxes truly wonderful performances from his central trio of actors, each asked to balance moments of tenderness, anxiety and hope.
By the time that Riceboy Sleeps reaches its ultimate destination, it is easy to see how Shim’s film won over the Toronto Film Critics Association. This is a tender, ambitious, meticulous and deeply empathetic work"
